tape problem

Hi there I'm having a problem with my backup server about every 3 days which is tape drive just "blows" in the kernel.

I have no clue on where to start, its very low level stuff.

Its a CentOS 5.7, I'm using tar and mbuffer to backup.

Thanks in advance.

You mention absolutely nothing about the hardware.  Please post the results of "lspci -vv" and "lsmod".  If you know the model of the card and drive you are using, it would be helpful too.

Did this ever work or are you just trying to get this set up?

Its a "Home made" Server, with a SAS Dell HBA and an LTO3 single tape drive.

I wonder if that tape is recognized as nst0.

Can you check what messages are reported when the st kernel module is loaded?

Do the following:

rmmod st
modprobe stgrep st /var/log/messages

paste back any relavent lines

I do that everytime I backup (10h30 AM) (check the bold) to have the Kmodule as clean as possible.

And I backup 3/4 time before st blows on the Kernel..

Ok.  I re-read your original question.  If you unload, reload the module as above, are you able to get information from mt using:

mt -f /dev/st0 status

You say it's every 3 days.  Is it exactly every 3 days?  

What the irq messages mean is the software tried to address the hardware at that interrupt. The card didn't respond causing mbuffer to hang and eventually crash.  It's probably a result of using a non-server hardware.  You might see if there is an updated bios for your motherboard.

Nope. I have to reboot once I hit the problem.

Also no, Its more or less between 2 or 4 days, don't actually have a fixed fail cycle (I know where you were going).

MB Bios update on its way but I'll have to wait until I go there physically.

I'll accept your solution since you are right, its crappy HW :) (With good HBA and LTO) @ Centos 5 Forums someone pointed to Bios also and stated ACPI problem.
