Excel 2010 Intermittent Crashes on Sorting

Hi there,

We have recently set up a new PC for a client (approx 1 week ago) and installed Office 2010. Our client is experiencing intermittent crashes in Excel whist attempting to perform sort operations.

All of the workbooks are in the Office 97 - 2003 format. After doing some research I was led to believe that it's an issue with Excel 2010 and the .xls format, though we have tested the same .xls files on another PC at the site running Office 2010 with no issues.

So far have attempted rebooting, running a repair on Office, ensuring the latest updates are installed and disabling addons.

Solution has been accepted but would like to add another possible solution to the problem of Excel 2010 hanging/crashing on data sorts.  Kind of led us around for awhile and this is an odd fix/workaround.

First make certain you have 64-bit edition of MSOffice 2010 so Excel can utilize more than a couple GB of RAM. Factory installs often install 32-bit version.

We could reliably reproduce freeze/hang if, prior to data sort, we chose the "Select All" button at the junction of the column heading row, and the row heading column.  This was reproduced in numerous spreadsheets, .xls and .xlsx .  If no selection was made, choosing data sort operated correctly every time.  (selection of data area was automatic)

Basic specs of PC with issue:
Win 7 Pro SP1
i7 processor with 8GB RAM
MS Office Pro 2010 64-bit (and same behavior with 32-bit)
