TS users can't run programs on Win2008 R2 server

Posted on 2012-04-05
Last Modified: 2012-08-13
Hello Experts,
I am deploying a Windows Server 2008 R2 for Terminal Services; everything has installed fine so far, but for some reason, users cannot run some programs - they need to be run as Administrator and the password is asked every time these applications are opened.
Is there a trick to relax security on Win2008 R2 server?

Thank you.

You can disable UAC totally or you can allow the program to run elevated all the time.

Not knowing what programs won't run makes it hard to determine the issue. Most common user programs should not need administrative rights to run. One thing I have run into in the past is when installing a program, usually an older ones, is that it asks if you want to install it for this user or all users.  If you are installing it as an administrator and select this user then it will require administrative rights.

Agreed with above. i've actually had this issue with one of my TS 2008 and while I don't recommend it adding users to the local admin group will fix this. It all depends on your security, what's on it, your policies, etc...
Does Powershell have you tied up in knots?

Managing Active Directory does not always have to be complicated.  If you are spending more time trying instead of doing, then it's time to look at something else. For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why

Thank you all; I removed the ACL but did not solve all the problems, some programs still don't run 100%. I will uninstall and reinstall with ACL disabled - if that doesn't work I will try adding users locally with Admin rights.

Will post results shortly.

FYI, the programs I am having problems with is Shoretel Communicator Client and Solar Eclipse by Epicor.

You are still having issues? Are you required to run as still?

No, some programs  do not execute because of insufficient authorization; I am a Domain Admin - so, something is still preventing the application to run properly.
I am new to Server 2008 R2.

Well what is the exact error. Is the error pertaining to the program or from Windows 2008 Server? You could be fighting a program issue not an OS issue
