Team Planner substitute for Project 2010 STANDARD instead of Pro?

Client has a large number of short projects they need to assign resources to. Team Planner is the ideal way to set up a view from which they can see usage and unassigned tasks at the same time in a calendar-esque window and drag and drop to assign the workload.

Client also only has Project Standard edition and Team Planner is a Professional edition feature. Before I spend too much time trying to come up with a custom layout myself or writing detailed instructions for some workaround, I thought I'd see if any Experts have suggestions or can even attach a template with a custom view that would help.

BTW, I've already suggested the solution of "just buy the upgrade to Pro" but budget prevents that, even though user knows it will make his life MUCH EASIER.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was actually just looking for ideas about combination or split views others have used in lieu of paying a lot of money to upgrade his Project license. They user is not planning to switch to another project program, even if it's free. I'll consider these products for some other opportunities, but stick with MS Project for the current one.

Other products are not what we wanted. We're sticking with MS Project. Now that management has seen how useful the feature is, I think an upgrade is possible.

Alternatives were not an option. We just wanted to see if someone had a combination view that would provide similar functionality.
