There's more than one dv5 model, so you need to be specific as to which one you have: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductList.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3744188&taskId=135

That ID maps to ene cir (infrared receiver) you may be able to use the technique identified here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and/Pavilion-Dv7-1170US-remote-control-not-working/td-p/170480

In particular:
Uninstall old Ene Cir receiver driver.

Resources:
Uninstalling Software in Windows 7
Uninstall or change a program in Windows 7

If You installed driver through Windows Update:

Go to Control Panel -> Devices Manager

and find there Ene Cir receiver. Click on it with right button of Your mouse and choose uninstall driver.

Only when You will uninstall previous driver install this from below:

Ene Cir here (ver 2.7.4.0)

Restart Your system.
