Can I encrypt a folder with a software?

I've used SQL Server FileStream to upload files to our server. I need to make sure the files are encrypted. But instead of encrypting the files themselves, can I encrypt the folder I'm uploading to?

Hi,

if it is Windows machine, you can encrypt file OR folder using Microsoft's EFS:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Encrypt-or-decrypt-a-folder-or-file
WARNING: backup your encryption certificate and key!!!

My note:
this encryption is only usefull in case your hard disk is moved to another machine in passive mode, meaning, YOUR OS is not running on it, so file/folder won't be accessible. But on YOUR machine while running, access is allowed for your login credentials.

Aha...
well, you may try TrieCrypt http://www.truecrypt.org/
I was using it for encryption of a FILE, which then it mounts as encrypted DRIVE X:\ in my case.
