I understand that a futex is essentially a fast semaphore.

However, it appears to have some effect on processes and the number of processes.

Could someone please explain how a futex interacts with processes

Providing you have man pages installed, you can enter man 2 futex and man 7 futex to learn the basics. From your previous question, you have already seen man 2 futex.
The man pages make perfect sense to me but I suppose I've been around for a while. If after reading man 7 futex you still have a question, please post it and I'll try to explain further.
