What is yellow exclamation mark over Skype Icon about

I am running the latest version of Skype.  I notice that in the bar at the bottom of my Windows 7 machine the Skype icon has a little yellow exclamation mark on top of it.

What does this mean?

That's a "1", not an exclamation point.  You probably have 1 pending contact request you haven't acted on yet.  Or it could be a "Recent" conversation you were invited to but did not join.

I don't mean to sound profoundly stupid but.  Away what?

Attached is a screen shot taken from my task bar.  Are you saying that Skype thinks that my status is away?

I tested this and went into Skype to try and put my status as online.  The icon for online is dimmed and nothing happens when I click it.

Any thoughts?

It's not an exclamation point it's a number 1 - showing you have one new text message.
