Magix MP3 Deluxe 'Parameter is incorrect' pops up when I click outside the application window.

I'm at my wits end.  I have purchased MP3 Deluxe, what seems to be a great software for managing your MP3 files.  I have posted a support ticket with the software maker, but unfortunately support from Magix has not managed to resolve anything.  I have thus registered here with Expert Exchange with the hope that somebody here might be able to help.  My problem seems to be related to something that has been corrupted on my user profile I think.
The problem:
Only on my logon, not on any other logons on this computer this issue happens.
I open the software, all is fine.  Then I click anywhere outside of the software window, i.e. the taskbar, and after a splitsecond a window pops up "parameter is incorrect" nothing else apart from an OK button.
This happens also when I go to 'Options' in the application's menu and click on a button in the area where you are invited to change file extension associations for this software.
This is so frustrating as after clicking around here and there these messages pop up everywhere, and I have to click OK several times to make them go away.
I have installed and uninstalled the software about 15 times, each time thoroughly removing the application and even using reg-cleaners and cleaners provided by Magix in order to see if I can fix the issue.
I have removed running processes, added and removed services, but nothing so far has stopped this annoying behaviour.
I really would like to find out what it is on my desktop user account that causes this so I can get that program running like it should and start loading my songs.
I am running Windows 7 32 bit on a dual boot iMac, and all drivers are up to date.
As I said, the application runs fine when logged in as someone else on the same machine, just not on my own login.
Happy - of course - to provide more information - please let me know what you need to know to help.  And many thanks in advance.

I'll try and help, I have never used this tool ok.
You say you have a boot camp and this is Windows 7 32 , which version? home pro etc??
You have several accounts on this windows 7
Do you have an administrator account?
And this is the area I want you to look into,
your windows 7 has a default administrator account, on that basis all other accounts are a base off /  ie connected to this ,  in other words you share the system with the default
so in order to fully  install devices remove / uninstall
I recommend that you log onto windows 7 default administrator account and uninstall this tool from there.
Have it removed from windows 7 all together so that all accounts on the windows 7 don't have it.
Then when you install it do so from the administrative account.
Then it should be made  available and accessible system wide for all accounts.

administrator, have you tried right clicking this program.exe and run as administrator?

Thank you Merete for your prompt reply - really appreciate your interest to help!

If you mean the Administrator account that you'll get when logging on in Safe Mode...
I haven't tried that yet.
I will certainly try this, but it's almost midnight here now, so I'll give this a shot in about 18 hours, after a good night's sleep and a day's work here in New Zealand.

Just to add to what I've done.  The account I have installed the software on has administrative rights.

I've tried installing from 2 logins, both with administrative rights, and behavior remains the same... My account displays the error, the other account doesn't.  No matter which account I use to install the software, it's always mine that misbehaves.

Re: which Windows?  it's Home Premium Service Pack 1

I have 2 accounts on this Windows installation and i'm using Bootcamp.

And, Yes, I have tried right-clicking and running as admin - Thanks for that suggestion too.

As mentioned earlier, I will next try to use the default admin account available when logging in in Safe mode, to see what happens when removing and re-installing the application there.  I'll keep you posted.

Unfortunately, all we can tell you is that this is absolutely the problem in the program itself, and software developer is the only one who can take care or it. If I was talking to them, I would give even more precise advice where to look for the error: in the subroutine "deactivate".

If you are unable to convince the developer to look into the problem (which is usually hard, but not impossible - you have to insist on escalating the problem to the higher level, and sometimes maybe call their corporate office), then I suggest that you try to change the resolution of the screen and maybe some other parameters of the screen. Basically, there's something in the parameters of your screen, most likely, that is different from other profiles, and this particularity is unaccounted for by this software. Try to find out what that is, can be resolution, color depth, theme, or something similar. Try to remove any screen customizations and change to some standard theme.

As a sidenote, I just looked at the description of this $50 software, and really didn't find anything that wouldn't be easily achievable by free Winamp, maybe with some plugins...

Hi vadimrapp2, thanks for that constructive advice.

I will also try all of the things you suggested, they seem to make good sense indeed.  When I know why this is happening at least then I can prove to Magix that it's something in the programming that needs to be modified, and more thoroughly tested.  First of all I guess, I just would like to find out what it is that causes this.  Magix support say, that that's the very first time they've heard of this error.  So all other installations in the world don't seem to behave that way. (Makes me feel special!!)

Just wondering - curious...
Why are you so sure that it's in a deactivate subroutine, where the error lies?
Or were you meaning, they should consider deactivating the software altogether??

Re the $50 dollar software I see where you're coming from there.
I just really liked the layout, the way it manages the music so intuitively and the fact that it all came in one package, but I do realise that there is some very good and cheaper competition out there.  I also have other software by the same maker and I especially like their audio lab for music restoration.  So, I trusted them that their MP3 software would just work, and also work as good.

On first run I also noted, that it seems to struggle a little with lots of music in your library.

I'll be much more careful before purchasing software next time.

> Why are you so sure that it's in a deactivate subroutine, where the error lies?

Because you said it happens when you click out of the window. In Windows API, i.e. in all Windows applications the reaction of the application to the window losing focus is called "deactivate", and it has been in place for decades. If interested, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.forms.form.deactivate.aspx . I think, this program has some code that is trying to somehow react on the window losing the focus, such as maybe to dim itself, or somehow move on the screen; while doing this, it's probably using some parameters of your screen, in order to calculate where to move etc., but that's where it hits some unexpected combination. Resolution they didn't expect, or enlarged screen font, or something like that. It's quite familiar situation for any experienced programmer.

> Magix support say, that that's the very first time they've heard of this error.

Simple test of this claim is - did they take the time to do the actual research? or they said it immediately? :-)

More seriously, pretty much any support in the world will tell you exactly this line about any problem, including the problem they hear about every day. They think that if they admit that some problem is widespread, you will immediately get together with other "victims" and sue them by class action. Not long ago I complained to my brokerage about glitch in their process of export to Quicken. After I heard the usual "this is first time anybody told us", I spent 5 minutes to find on the web forums several references to exactly this problem with exactly their brokerage, and faxed the results to the office of their CEO with the subject "lies by your support department". Received 6 months of commission-free trading already on the next day.

Speaking of managing the music library - me, I'm still on XP, and frankly, simply having the folder "my music" is enough for me to be able to get the tune I want at the moment in my headphones in less than 5 seconds. In Windows 7, I believe they made some further advances exactly to this area of manageability, "searchability", etc. And if I want as much as to have certain mp3 file to have the icon being the picture of the cover of this album, plus lyrics of the song in the tag, then also opening winamp extention is all it takes...

vadimrapp1, that's quite impressive and believable what you've explained there.  I have a good feeling that now I might be going somewhere.  I will soon (like in 12 hours) investigate to see what's different in the configuration of my displays, fonts, etc.

The explanation you gave me as to why this must be related to the 'deactivate' subroutine.  I could just send that explanation to Magix and ask them to forward it to their software team to further investigate.  But I guess having some kind of backbone to my/your claims will make my claims much more convincing.

I'll definitely let you know how I got on in due course.
Once again, thanks so much for your thorough explanations.  Support here is worth every cent of the Experts Exchange subscription I feel :-)

Merete, I have had another good read of your post and everything you suggested I have already tried.

I assumed first that like in Windows XP there was a hidden Administrator Account that only shows up when restarting the computer in Safe Mode, but this doesn't seem to be the case.  Then I checked that my account was in fact the default Administrative account and it is, as I can't delete it, but I can delete the other one, which also happens to be an administrative account.

Apart from the disabled Guest Account there are no other accounts.  I am running the software as an administrator and right-clicking and selecting run as administrator makes in this case no difference.  I still get the error, which I am now so miffed off about.
Many thanks indeed for your suggestions, but I have to tick that one off as done and dusted, and ready to try other things.

Please if there is anything else you can suggest - I would be very happy to try that too.

vadimrapp1, I have searched high and low for any differences between the 2 accounts, and I cannot see anything unusual.  Screen and Colour settings are identical.
I have run diagnostic tests, checked for versions of DirectX, which is 11 on my computer.
I compared Aero Peak settings, taskbar settings, Display settings, I have run the Performance Diagnostic tool which also has a tool that checks for any errors and tries to fix them, but no errors were found.
I have turned off all fancy display features that come with Windows 7, tuning it for optimal performance, and that made no difference.
Refresh rates and Screen Resolutions between both accounts are identical.
Could it be that one account has different settings in the keys of the registry to the other account?  If so, how could I make sure that the one of the good account are exactly copied across without causing any damage?  Probably not possible to do that safely I guess.

Is there a tool I could download and install that can compare further configurations that might not be obvious worth trying?

Is there a way that I could safely copy across all settings from the user account that behaves to the one that has the issues in order to fix?

I'll try anything that's not too risky.  Looking so much forward to further ideas.
Thanks in advance.

Hi nzwebbie, ok that's good to know,
lets work on what you have said this usually holds a key
I'll break it down to look at the different aspects see if we can find the problem area
(a) you say here
Only on my logon, not on any other logons on this computer.< on this computer does this apply to Mac as well? or only windows, otherwise this points to your account , you have two accounts, different names?
Which account was this software installed in?

Find out what differs from your account and this other account if you can.
How is this program installed over two accounts or only installed once?
Which files are associtaed on the Hard drive to your account and this software.
If the files are missing something may cause an improper function.
Use some of the ideas from  vadimrapp1 with th edisplay screen.
It may be that some functions are for the 3D or for a touch screen monitor.

(b)
I open the software, all is fine.  Then I click anywhere outside of the software window, i.e. the taskbar, and after a splitsecond a window pops up "parameter is incorrect" nothing else apart from an OK button.<< this says to me may point to touch screen function not mouse.
(c)
This happens also when I go to 'Options' in the application's menu and click on a button in the area where you are invited to change file extension associations for this software.<< what stands out here>where you are invited to change file extension associations for this software< what does this mean change file extensions for this software ?
It could possibly be a manufacturer problem say for example you have a license to own this product but only registered in the name of the installer?
Then if you install it again in your account it has failed.
This software should be installed in your full administrative account only as your account is the default.
The other account is the second.
Who is it registered to?
(D)
This is so frustrating as after clicking around here and there these messages pop up everywhere, and I have to click OK several times to make them go away
This sounds like the software functions are not functioning right.

Ok trying to bind the problems together in your account only in windows 7 32 bit

Thanks Merete for such a lengthy exploration of my problem.
I will try and answer your questions as well as I possibly can

RE: (a) you say here
Only on my logon, not on any other logons on this computer.< on this computer does this apply to Mac as well? or only windows,

(ME:) Only Windows, when Windows runs Apple is completely out of the picture, as I only boot one operating system on this dual boot system.  So, yes, I have one account with my name and another account also with admin rights for the remainder of the family.  The family account rarely gets used, as we have other computers throughout the house.

Re: otherwise this points to your account , you have two accounts, different names?
Which account was this software installed in?

(ME:) The Account the software was installed in was 95% of the time my default admin account - the one with my name.  I only once, after removing the application tried installing the application on the family account, with EXACTLY the same results.  Family account: no issues.  My account: the error messages pop up.
All attempts of trying new things, even my attempt of using registry cleaners that attempted to completely remove leftover bits, fixed nothing.  And indeed it did find quite a few left-over remnants after normal uninstalling.  To uninstall I used 2 different applications that seem to do it well, namely: the free Advanced Uninstaller PRO 10 and the not so free Advanced Systemcare 5 from IOBIT.  But I also used the cleaner file provided to me by MAGIX support to remove any remnants they were aware of, so this should have provided the perfect platform to start with a clean install.  Only thing I didn't do, because I'm using it a lot for my semi-professional Audio Cleaning jobs I left on Magix Audio Cleaner MX, which has always and still is working well for me.

RE: Find out what differs from your account and this other account if you can.

(ME:) That I have already done, by printing out and comparing all kinds of information, including running processes when logged on as either user.
I have removed a lot of processes, and services, and nothing made the error go away when logged in as myself.
As mentioned in an earlier comment I also compared all kinds of environmental variables involving screen resolution, graphics settings, etc.

RE: How is this program installed over two accounts or only installed once?

(ME:) Just over the my main admin account, not the other family one.

RE: Which files are associated on the Hard drive to your account and this software.

(ME:) Currently I have removed all typical media file-associations from Magix MP3 MX, the only ones I can't remove are 2 that are native to this applications, and not used by other applications.  Files such as MP3, WMA, etc are associated to other players on this account.
Usually iTunes.  When I first installed the Magix MP3 Deluxe MX player, I had associated all  media file extensions I could to this player, later I kept it unselected.
I also had some problems after uninstalling so I had to do a system restore twice, which caused problems with the database, so I completely removed the database as well with the software, and these 'parameter is incorrect' errors still come up with no music loaded into the application at all.

RE: If the files are missing something may cause an improper function.

(ME:) The media files all play fine on the other media players.  I also have installed on my machine: Acoustica Mixcraft 5, Audacity, VLC Media Player, Jaangle, iTunes, Radio DJ and a couple of other minor media player, Ah yes, and Windows Media Player.
Some file extensions I use more with one media player, others with another.

(Still ME:) The files are accessed via a Bridge to the Apple portion of the harddrive, the bridge I use is an interface called: MacDrive.  I have never had any issues whatsoever with this.
This enables me to have all files at one location and to still being able to access them with both operating systems.

RE: Use some of the ideas from  vadimrapp1 with the display screen.
It may be that some functions are for the 3D or for a touch screen monitor.

(ME:) I have done my best to compare the two logon accounts, but they appear identical, and one works and the other one doesn't.
What really seems strange that the account that this application wasn't installed on is the one that works flawlessly.

RE: (b)
I open the software, all is fine.  Then I click anywhere outside of the software window, i.e. the taskbar, and after a splitsecond a window pops up "parameter is incorrect" nothing else apart from an OK button.
<< this says to me may point to touch screen function not mouse.

(ME:) I don't really understand this, as the actual database interface on the main screen is not really using any touch-screen features as far as I'm aware.

RE: (c)
This happens also when I go to 'Options' in the application's menu and click on a button in the area where you are invited to change file extension associations for this software.
<< what stands out here>where you are invited to change file extension associations for this software< what does this mean change file extensions for this software?

(ME:) I meant basically: I tell the application which file-types when clicked on should open Magix MP3 Deluxe MX.
I can provide a screen-shot to clarify this.  (See file attached)

RE: It could possibly be a manufacturer problem say for example you have a license to own this product but only registered in the name of the installer?

(ME:) With the conversations I had with Magix support it appears that they are okay with how I went about installing this application.  Not really sure though what you meant.

RE: Then if you install it again in your account it has failed.

(ME:) So far it always worked and there doesn't seem a problem with me re-registering multiple times - at least nothing has changed in regard how it worked on both accounts - one always works the other one always throws the error window.

RE: This software should be installed in your full administrative account only as your account is the default.  The other account is the second.  Who is it registered to?

(ME:) Yes, it's registered to myself / my name, and it's been installed on my account.  I never tried installing the software on any other computers, so don't know how it would behave elsewhere.

RE: (D)
This is so frustrating as after clicking around here and there these messages pop up everywhere, and I have to click OK several times to make them go away
This sounds like the software functions are not functioning right.

(ME:) I agree! and so does vadimrapp1

Re: Ok trying to bind the problems together in your account only in windows 7 32 bit
Using your comments  the problem areas
>file extensions changed, Options in applications not functioning.

(ME:) Not so sure if the options aren't functioning now, in fact something I have done recently at least lets me make changes again (before this was greyed out), but that's about all.

RE: May be an overload on your system since you have a MAC on first.

(ME:) Don't think so, I doubt the system is overloaded, I am running this 32 bit system on 4GB RAM and processes seem to not hit the top, like they would on some of my other computers.

RE: Take a look in your events errors.
open the Run from your start menue type in>> copy paste into run>  eventvwr
expand windows logs and click on the Application.
On the right you will see all the recent events errors.

(ME:) Thanks for that tip - I just checked that one out...
The last error happened about 1 hour ago, and seems unrelated.
I had these 'parameter is incorrect' messages pop up only a few moments ago when taking that screenshot.  I also had a look in other places, but nothing shows that seems related.  I was hoping - Yes, maybe we'll find something!  But I guess my hoping fell short of success.

RE: From the manual>>

(ME:) My computer meets those specs well.

Re: l Multi-touch enabled monitor: for using Touch Mode in the mufin Vision 3D music universe

(ME:) I don't have a multi-touch enabled monitor.  Surely this would not be a requirement to run the software (??)  Just a feature for tablet computers like iPads

Did you also compare the screen font? isn't it by any chance enlarged on this account?

> Could it be that one account has different settings in the keys of the registry to the other account?

All the checks you are doing, registry, permissions, admin/not admin, and everything else around, they would make sense if this happened somewhere on startup of the application. But if the application is working and only giving this error on click, it's 100% internal bug of the coding. All we can do is to find the combination of the circumstances that triggers it, but even then it still will be a bug that developers should want to reproduce and fix.

There are three other things I can suggest.

1. Are you absolutely sure this error is coming from this application? close all other applications. Will it still happen? with error on the screen, open task manager, look at CPU percentage, then quickly drag around the error message around the screen with your mouse. Will CPU consumed by Maxis application increase?

2. compare all the settings of the application on good and bad account. Also, uninstall Maxis, then erase all its remains from the registry and from files. In regedit, find all occurences of Maxis and delete all keys. Most likely hkcu/software/maxis and hklm/software/maxis, or something similar. Then reinstall.

3. Launch the program and get to the point where your next click will produce the error.
Run Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645) and specify the filter to monitor only Maxis application
Make the fatal click in Maxis so the error shows up
stop monitoring as soon as possible
save the result

Then do the same on the good account
compare the results. With luck, you will see that "bad" application is doing something that "good" one is not doing. This is very unlikely, but not entirely impossible.

If all 3 don't help, then I would use this problem as the reason to ask Maxis for money back (in fact I would do it even without any of them, right after the phone call). If you decide to do it and Maxis refuses, initiate chargeback with credit company with the code "Not as Described or Defective" (provided that you paid by credit card).

What are you actually doing when you click outside the application?>>agix MP3 Deluxe 'Parameter is incorrect' pops up when I click outside the application window.<<left clicking on the desktop?
Left clicking where on a drive letter or a folder?
Please define the steps that creates this message Parameter is incorrect as this message can point to lots of different things but is based on what your doing.
If your trying access a location and that only works in the other account?
Or copying files from a source outside of your account?

When you installed the software did you see the message install for everyone?

Merete, basically this message pops up when I mouse-click anywhere that isn't on the application window that's in focus itself.  So, I usually click on the taskbar or on the desktop when the application window isn't maximised.  That usually does it.  Also minimising the application at the top of the Magix application window brings up that error.
I'm not actually calling up anything, I just click on the taskbar or on the open Magix application icon on the taskbar trying to minimise it or restore it, and that's all that is required for that warning message to pop up.

Re: When you installed the software did you see the message install for everyone?

Answer: No, that option is not even presented to me.  All there is is a Standard/Default install option, and an advanced install option, but all that the advanced one does is asks you which directories you want to use for certain functions (i.e. working folders) and then also which files you want to associate with Magix MP3 Deluxe MX.
On first install I chose all file-types.  Later on I kept chosing none, but 2 file-types are greyed out because these are file-types only registered to Magix MP3 Deluxe MX anyway.

Message to all:
The latest I've heard from the Magix support team is I was provided with a download link to a database Upgrade.
The response was:
They have spoken with the German support for this product. They have advised to try the database upgrade: and then they gave me a link to it.  Then they went on to say, that...
"They are also a little suspicious of the Soluto shell that you have installed, that it may in some way be interfering."

I installed the upgrade/patch, but the error remained, so the upgrade was ineffective.

Re Soluto I responded a little later that I was also suspicious of that and that infact I had removed Soluto almost straight after that error showed up.  Once before Soluto prevented an application to work.  That was then a Media Recorder.
So I don't have Soluto anymore.

vadimrapp1 - I have now tried your suggestions... not quite finished, but the comparing of 2 monitor files sounds like a tough task when the first session on the bad account recorded around 70 000 events in just 30 seconds.

Here are my responses to your last comments (again, look for the (Me:) entries)... :-)

(vadimrapp1) Did you also compare the screen font? isn't it by any chance enlarged on this account?

(Me:)  Yes, I did, and no, it's 100% on both accounts.
Here is some data which is identical on both accounts:
Screenfont size: 100%

> Could it be that one account has different settings in the keys of the registry to the other account?
(vadimrapp1) All the checks you are doing, registry, permissions, admin/not admin, and everything else around, they would make sense if this happened somewhere on startup of the application. But if the application is working and only giving this error on click, it's 100% internal bug of the coding. All we can do is to find the combination of the circumstances that triggers it, but even then it still will be a bug that developers should want to reproduce and fix.

(vadimrapp1) There are three other things I can suggest.

(vadimrapp1) 1. Are you absolutely sure this error is coming from this application? close all other applications. Will it still happen? with error on the screen, open task manager, look at CPU percentage, then quickly drag around the error message around the screen with your mouse. Will CPU consumed by Maxis application increase?

(Me:) Not when dragging, only when clicking outside the window... by about 3 MB roughly.

(vadimrapp1) 2. compare all the settings of the application on good and bad account. Also, uninstall Maxis, then erase all its remains from the registry and from files. In regedit, find all occurences of Maxis and delete all keys. Most likely hkcu/software/maxis and hklm/software/maxis, or something similar. Then reinstall.

(Me:) Done this again now.  Once I've finished there were no traces left.  Not anywhere in the folders, nor in the registry.
Then I reinstalled.
Tested
No change.

(vadimrapp1) 3.

(Me:) Done this, but this was tricky, because the moment I click away from the application window to start the monitor, I start the warning message pop up over and over.
Wow!!! Within 30 seconds I had something like 70 000 events recorded.  That is impressive, but I really don't know what to do with the results?
It recorded way too much for me to even know what to do with it.

(vadimrapp1) Then do the same on the good account
compare the results. With luck, you will see that "bad" application is doing something that "good" one is not doing. This is very unlikely, but not entirely impossible.

(Me:)  Okay, I forgot to do that part, but how do I compare the results?
There will all kinds of variables come into play.  If I print out those 70 000 events this will be tricky and papery.

(vadimrapp1) If all 3 don't help, then I would use this problem as the reason to ask Maxis for money back (in fact I would do it even without any of them, right after the phone call). If you decide to do it and Maxis refuses, initiate chargeback with credit company with the code "Not as Described or Defective" (provided that you paid by credit card).

(Me:) I am not looking forward to this step.  I much rather would like to find the issue and tell Magix what it is they need to fix, or at least get the programme working again.
But, yes, I guess... I'll see what I get when comparing the 2 filtered monitor files.

vadimrapp1 - It looks as though you have been right!!!!

I have attached below, a screenshot of readings of both accounts the Bad and the Good.
Have a look.

What do you recommend I tried next??

I have highlighted in yellow the portion that I believe smells bad!
The blue arrows on the Good Account file shows from where on in things started to go sour on the Bad Account.  I started the monitoring very carefully from the very instance when I clicked on the minimised application icon on the taskbar.

Is my registry corrupted??

RE: Yes another thing. Open Environment Variables and check if any in the user part point to nonexisting drives or directories.

(Me:) Yes, thank you.  There are two entries, one TEMP and another TMP.  Both variables point to a directory that exists on my C: drive.  So all seems good there.

"ACCESS DENIED" is always suspicious. Check what is it trying to create, file or directory; see if you have access to it, try to open that directory in Explorer. Try removing that directory (if it has some contents, move it elsewhere), or give it full permissions for everyone, see it that makes a change. It's not necessarily an error, because sometimes the i/o routines check for existence of directory by trying to create the file with the same name, and it's expected to fail.

> Is my registry corrupted??
No, there's nothing wrong with the registry. What you highlighted yellow is normal.

Hooooray!
It's fixed!

I have done a few things though before I confirmed this, so don't know what it was that eventually corrected the problem.

I have upgraded version 10 of SnagIT to version 11.  SnagIT however was turned off quite a few times during testing, so don't think that was it.

I have also changed default paths to other locations on my hard-drives - on both accounts - maybe that corrected it.  But I'm sure I did a quick test and after changing the paths it still didn't behave.

Then....
I had another look at the processes and further down the page I noted a reference to a Registry key with the comment Name not found.
When I checked I couldn't find it indeed, what the software then did is looked for the same key at HKCR, where it could find it.
So I went to the family account and noted that the HKCR key was not in the HKCU path.
I thought maybe I should copy that key and contents into the HKCU location.
So, I exported the key first, and then imported it again.
I actually tried to copy the key to HKCU, but didn't know how to do it (simple copy and paste doesn't seem to work like in Windows Explorer for example), when re-importing again after selecting the folder at the end branch of the HKCU path, I hoped the key would be copied into there, but it didn't.  It wasn't there so it must have overwritten the key back to the old location where it originally was imported from...
However after logging off from the family account, and logging back on to my account, and running the application... To my surprise... The 'parameter is incorrect' window stopped popping up.
I wanted to make sure that that wasn't just a fluke, so I restarted the computer, and it is now still behaving.

But there was one final thing I had done, which could have fixed the issue, don't ask me how...

Just before I did the usual, that is, clicking on the taskbar, after the first startup of the application, this time I first clicked the minimise button at the top right of the window, rather than trying to minimise it on the icon on the taskbar.
Maybe THAT sent a command to the application telling it that it is NOW minimised.
Maybe the application when first clicking the icon on the taskbar didn't know whether it was open or closed, so throw an error, but by actually clicking the minimise (horizontal line button at the top) I actually explicitly told it to minimise, which it understood.

Which of these do you think is the most likely culprit having caused the issue??

I am just glad this ordeal is over and I can now importing my files again.

Who knows, maybe before too long, I might have another issue...
But I'll wait and see.

I will now have to decide on points, I hope you agree that what I've decided is a fair distribution...

All I can say is to you both Merete and  vadimrapp1 thanks for staying with me, and all the fantastic and truly expert advice!

Take care!

Unfortunately, even though the issue was corrected, I couldn't pinpoint exactly how my what it was that solved the issue.  This is because I had manipulated a few things before I realised that something I did fixed everything.  What is clear is that without the helpful ideas/advice, especially the suggestion to download and use the processes monitor application, which made me investigate areas I hadn't been thinking about, I would have not been able to fix my problem.  Even the manufacturer's help didn't get me anywhere closer.  So, I'm really glad I came her for some advice.
I had picked my summary as the best solution, simply because one of the things mentioned in that summary must have been the fix, whereas all the other comments provided by the expert, didn't really provide the fix, but definitely strategies on finding it.
I hope this makes sense, I tried to be fair with the scoring of points based on the quantity as well as helpfulness of advice received.
P.S. Maybe there will be follow-up comments by one or both of the experts that make it clear what would have been the most likely fix, but whatever the follow-up comments, it would not affect the scoring in any way.
