Send Text Messages

Hi All,

Our company has a monitoring software that emails the on-call engineer when their is an issue.

Currently we have this doing SMS 2 email.  Which works well.  However it is reliant on the email working, which didn't this weekend.  I did consider setting up an external system to monitor SMTP, but decided it would be better to look into how to send text messages via a sim card.

I have no idea where to styart and everything online appears to be geared toward using gateways etc... which again adds an extra step in the alerting process.

So my question is.  How can a computer be connected to a sim card and setup to send text messages.

many thanks
