I am new to Mac but remember hearing there is a feature of Lion or an add on program where I can lock files with a password, and that it's protected by encryption?<br />

- What's that called? <br />
- Is it public key / private key encryption?<br />
- How do I toggle between locked and unlocked states?<br />

I would put my 1Password files there, I imagine.<br />
I would also put my source code repository there was well.<br />

Mac OS X is the desktop operating system from Apple Inc., found on Macintosh computers. Encryption is the process of encoding messages or information in such a way that only authorized parties can read it. In an encryption scheme, the intended communication information or message, referred to as plaintext, is encrypted using an encryption algorithm, generating ciphertext that can only be read if decrypted. For technical reasons, an encryption scheme usually uses a pseudo-random encryption key generated by an algorithm. An authorized recipient can easily decrypt the message with the key provided by the originator to recipients, but not to unauthorized interceptors.

Encryption

Apple's early computers ran on a variety of operating systems, including a Pascal version and one based on CP/M, before releasing its ProDOS with the advent of its 16-bit computer. With the release of the Lisa, which had its own OS, Apple and computing entered the graphical age; it was followed by the Macintosh, which offered a series of "System" operating systems. Other Mac operating systems included PowerPC until Apple acquired NeXT and folded it into the Mac OS. Current operating systems for Apple devices are Mac OS-X and iOS.
