What folder for temporary exe?

We have created a small exe and associated ini file that we use for diagnostics on customers sites. Customers can go to our website, run a configuration program which downloads the diagnostic exe and ini and sets the exe running.

We do not want to go through a full Windows installation for this as this is overkill for the customers who just want something that will load and start running in 10-15 seconds.

Where should we download this exe to and run according to Windows philosophy and where it is guaranteed to work?
1. A customer doing this may be an administrator on the machine but may also be a basic user.
2. Also during the course of the procedure the user might change.
3. The exe also needs to be able to write to its ini when it first starts.
4. The OS could be XP, Vista, Win7 32-bit, Win7 64-bit

%temp%
or %appdata%

When I put %temp% into the Start menu it gives me the current user's name in the path so this wouldn't work for the multi-user situation described above.

Likewise %appdata%

for multi-user (all users) %programdata%

But does %programdata% work on XP?

no it doesn't then you're stuck to make a directory off of the c:\ root and use it.

Most of our customers would have c:\ locked down too. That would be a very unconventional approach and I think most IT Managers would have a fit if you suggested it to them!

I didn't say c:\ I said to a sub folder off of C: i.e. C:\Remote Support\

Quote: directory off of the c:\ root

Why can't the program be reinstalled for each support case? this way you can get around the 'multi-user' problem.
I've canceled my membership here as I'm simply not getting answers.
