I have process explorer installed on XP SP3 and have not been able to find out what the path or similar paths mean. In this example \device\afd\endpoint. It indicates it is a file. AFD is a system driver. But the path is confusing. Can anyone explain it.

If it was a file it would have c:\path\filename.ext
\device\ means just that a device
\device\namedpipe\ is a named pipe

path is just that the path that the system took to get to the file
c:
\windows
\system32
svchost.exe

=== c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe

Thank you. Do you know where the path "\device\namedpipe\is a named pipe" is stored or retrieved?

A named pipe is an inter process communication method perhaps this wikipedia entry will shed some light on what they are for you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Named_pipe
