How to edit the Page Number Position in End-notes?  A puzzler for Word 2007 Experts

At the end of a long manuscript (over 400 pages) I have some 15 pages of Endnotes (each corresponding to a number in the text of the Ms).

What I want to do:  The publisher wants the position of ALL the page numbers nearer the text (obviously to save space in the printing). I have been able to do this successfully for the main part of the Manuscript, but am in trouble for the ENDNOTES.  The option to change the position of the ENDNOTES PAGE NUMBERS  seems closed to me.
I hope I have made my problem here. How do I move the page numbers for the Endnotes  upwards (lessening the distance between the page number and the bottom line of the text)?

Is this a problem with Word's EndNotes facility, or is it one with a third-party product with a similar name?

No Graham. This is a problem with Word 2007 properly authenticated.

Are the page numbers in the Header?

If so, you could reduce the top margin and the header distance from the top of the page.  The settings are on the Page Setup dialogue, opened with the  tiny arrow at the bottom right of the Page Setup group on the Page Layout tab.

If you don't want the settings to affect the rest of the document, you will need to separate the Endnotes off into their own section by inserting a Next Page section break. You will also need to unlink that section's header with the 'Link to Previous' button in the Navigation group of Design tab under 'Header & Footer Tools'

If I have it the wrong way round, you can adjust the bottom margin and Footer settings instead.
