Install VMWare Tools in Ubuntu Server

Hello,

Another fine example of tech doing the exact opposite of what the FAQ indicates it should. I just want to install VMWare tools in an ubuntu server instance, running on VMWare ESXi. I have added the tools installation to the guest from the console, but that is where it ends. According to the console the cdrom is locked by the guest for VMWare tools install, but where in the O.S. is it?

/dev/cdrom does not exist and /dev/sr0 is not a directory.
/mnt/cdrom is empty
/media/cdrom is also empty.

I have no idea where else the image may be hiding. It should only ever GO to one place, but what do I know?

Thoughts as to what I am doing wrong?

If you're still curious a quick df -h should show you what's mounted and where or just type mount for a different view.

I use a version of the instructions below for installing the tools in Unbuntu Workstation (instructions depend upon Ubuntu version). I follow the instructions carefully and the tools install. The instructions here show you how to mount the drive with the tools.

df-h and mount show nothing concerning a cdrom

The Ubuntu instructions are not congruent to what I have. I cannot mount /dev/cdrom to anything, it doesn't exist.

How do you use the Server CD Rom in Ubuntu (without the tools installed)?  Does it exist? Is it connected to the machine?   ... Thinkpads_User

The server runs as a vm in a VSphere/VMWare ESXi installation. All installs, which would require a CD, are done via .ISO image. It is cake to mount that to the vm. Aside of that and the tools install the CD is not needed.
Cheat - Just download the debian package that you need from here and run it with dpkg

See if this VMware website can help you with downloading the Tools as an image. I have not used this method and cannot vouch for it. .... Thinkpads_User
