technically, any website may recognise where you are if it wants and no proxy server used.

^^^ that's not strictly true, geolocation via your IP address is often based on the average location of the ISP providing the connection.  This can often be out by a couple of hundred miles.  The reason for accurate location on social media is that portable devices give their own position based on GPS or triagulation of cell phone masts, this can be accurate to a few feet!  The latter is the principle that social location networks like GoWalla rely on.
