Lotus Domino how to receive and send mail for two or more domain

I have my lotus domino 8.5.3 server. My domino server  has two internet domain names ie abc.com and other xyz.com. Users will have email ids user1@abc.com and user2@xyz.com etc

But when the user2 send the email to user3@xyz.com it should route to the external smart host and email to abc.com domain should route internally.

Now when the users send email to user3@xyz.com I am getting the error user name not found in domino directory. I have created the xyz.com as global domain other wise I am not able to receive email for xyz.com.

I did not create any internet site document. I just created one global document under domain and put the email id user2@abc.com in the personnel document in the internet email field for the user2.

I am using popcon to pull the email from my hosted email server. It is working fine except for sending giving problem. I have attached the screen shot of my settings.

Maybe you have to create
- an Internet Site document for Inbound SMTP  for abc and xyz
- an explicit connection document to xyz.com

I have only one global domain document and I put xyz.com as the alternate domain as you can see the attached file.

My requirement is email with xyz.com should route to the outside using my smart host similar to what I send like yahoo, hotmail etc and only address with abc.com should route internally.Since the users with xyz.com are sitting outside my org accessible through internet. I need xyz.com only for receiving the email(inbound).

What is happening if I send any mail with user3@xyz.com giving an error user not found in domino directory instead of routing to outside server using the internet smarthost.

Again: make a Connection document to route xyz.com explicitly to the Internet. Ah, but then incoming mails wouldn't be delivered... Hmmm...

Commented:
In your Global domain document, check the conversions tab.

What's in the following fields:

Local primary internet domain. Is this abc.com ?
Alternate Internet domain aliases.  Is this xyz.com ?

Commented:
I just spotted your PDF and I see both are set to abc.com

Set the Alternate Internet domain aliases to xyz.com (you may need to restart the mail router for this to take effect).

Ahhh, just read this:

Settings in the Global domain document are static and loaded only at server initialization.

Reboot time.

On the 3rd tab in the Configuration document, did you set an Alternate Internet domain alias?

Do I need to set up to route mail over a transient connection? Only only global document. I did not set up transient connection. Pls advise.
Sjef BosmanGroupware Consultant

Commented:
You might have to inform your server where it can find xyz.com. Why is the connection "transient" ?

Commented:
If you read the link you send me there is something mentioned

"If for any of the preceding reasons people in your organization have addresses in an Internet domain other than the primary domain, create a Global Domain document."

My case the users in xyz.com not in my address book they are situated in a differences email server out side my organization.

How can I handling this problem in this scenario.

Did you see these suggestions:
Maybe you have to create
- an Internet Site document for Inbound SMTP  for abc and xyz
- an explicit connection document to xyz.com

I didn't mean inbound. The idea is to create an outbound connect to deliver mail to xyz, and also an Foreign Domain document for all mail with destination xyz.com.

So in this way  can I remove the global document or only remove the alternate domain entry  xyz.com from the global document. Please advise.

I've been thinking about your question, but I don't know what advice to give you. So much has happened that I lost track completely.

All I can say is that it is usually very logical what you have to do: if you have two domains, you need two Global Domain documents; if one domain isn't exactly on your server, you have to tell Domino how to reach it, using a Connection document. The very best option would be to install a test environment (using VMs, so you can make a backup and roll everything back if you need to), and create the necessary documents in the Address Book until it works.

The problem solved after I put the "Local internet domain  smart host" in the configuration document for the server it is working fine. I have attached the screenshot.

Good that it works now, but be aware of the issues you might have. The smart host is used as a sort of "mail dump": all mail that cannot be routed locally is sent to the smart host. So if your first server receives a mail for xxxx@yourdomain.c0m, and that user doesn't exist in the first domain, that mail is routed to the 2nd domain. Let's hope it's not a 10Mb mail that hits your server every 5 minutes... ;-)

If you have some spare time, or you have a trainee or student who needs an assignment, set up a test environment and find out if there's a better way. Several VM's with Linux and Domino, and Bob's your uncle.

This is the only solution since my requirement is very unique.
