Edit the global policy in Active Directory

Hi all,

I have a requirement. I should change the password policy (password length should be changed from 7 to 8) which is part of the global policy

Server: Windows Server 2003

I would want to know the consequences

To change the password Policy of your domain Do this,

1. On your windows server 2003 go to Run-------.Gpmc.msc

2. Go to Default Domain policy-------->Right click on it------>Edit.

3.Go to Windows settings--->Security Settings--->Account/password Policies.

4.Change Minimum password lenght to 8 Characters (Make sure Option , Password must meet the complexity requirement is enabled).

5. Click ok---->Finish

Once you have done this , it will apply to all the client systems ( After 90 Mins)

There is pretty little impact with changing this settings.
Current 7 character passwords will continue to work, until a password change is requested/triggered.

Only then does the 8 character requirement come into effect.
Any new users or password resets that happen after the policy is applied will also be required to have a 8 character or more password length.

The only consequence I can think of is users calling you non stop because they can't change their passwords (for the obvious reasons to you), you need to put in place a good document detailing to them how to create a good password that meets the complexity/security policy, then upload on your intranet or e-mail them.
