This is a good place to start, it covers the basics quite well http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_intro.asp
http://www.blooberry.com is a good HTML resource.

HTML for dummies is a good book to get.

For general questions about doing things in HTML, there is always Experts Exchange and you know you get quick answers from that!

I recommend

Web Design in a Nutshell, Jennifer Niederst Robbins, O'Reilly Publishing, 2006

It has not only HTML, but also CSS, PHP, MySQL, and several other things you will eventually need.

It's an excellent book to learn from with lots of examples, and also serves later as a quick reference.

I agree that W3 schools is a good place to start but I didn't really understand CSS formatting until I took a college course.  One textbook was

Web Development and Design Foundations with XHTML, 5th Edition
http://www.amazon.com/Development-Design-Foundations-XHTML-Edition/dp/0132122707/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334586989&sr=8-1

This is a college textbook so it isn't cheap.
