Please let me know how I can add an image using Google maps API at an absolute position. I am trying to add an image of a custom legend. So, the positioning of the image is to be constant.

Put the map in a container styles with position relative.  Then in the CSS do the legend this way:

#legend {position:absolute; z-index:10; left:???px; top:???px;}

replace the ??? with the left and top position you want relative to the map.

Good, I was getting worried that Google was messing with the map and breaking the CSS.
