Question on Data migration from one SAN LUN to another in VMware

For a Linux machine, if I have a datastore of 100GB allocated but only 20GB is used, which of the following option takes less time –

1.  Migrate complete datastore using vMotion/storage vMotion.

2.  Create a new datastore and rsync data. Once rsync is done, mount new datastore onto old mount point.

What’s the breakeven point to choose one over the other?  Please let me know.

Thanks

Storage vMotion moves the virtual machines disk in real time with no downtime.

vMotion does not move the storage just the running server process from one Host Server to another.

A Cold Migration, moves the virtual disk.

Thanks. One last question:

Could you explain when Storage vMotion happens from one SAN LUN to another, how the data blocks are actually copied to new datastore?  When methodology VMware uses to ensure the integrity of data and how it happens faster ?

We need this information to explain our customer.

The process creates a snapshot of the VM, all current changes are written to a delta file, the parent disk is moved to the new datastore, on completion, the changes that have occured during the move are written the the parent virtual disk on the new datastore.
