Hello. I can set default page layout for new pages but is it possible to set default page layout for new subsites? I can select my custom page layout after page is created but this is not the most easiest possible solution.

Under Site Settings of your top level site, Under the "Look and Feel" area is "Page layouts and site templates".

Within there is "New Page Default Settings" where you can choose your default page layout.

When new sites are created, the default setting in their version of this screen should be "Inherit default page layout from parent site" so the default page layout works for new sites in that way.

I don't understand. I create a parent site and set the correct page layout. After that I navigate to "Page layouts and site templates" and use "New Page Default Settings" to set the correct default layout. When I create a new _subsite_ (publishing site) I do not have the correct page layout.

Are the necessary Content Types available automatically used by that Page Layout?

Were the Content Types created via Feature or by hand?

I would like to sayt that they are created via feature, but I am not sure.

I used HyperV to test this problem with new sharepoint/server installation. I could see the same problem with the out of the box sharepoint. Create Publishing site. Set page layout.  Play with "Page Layout and Site Template Settings". Everything works when you create a new page but if you create a new subsite, SharePoint seems to always use summary links as a default page layout.

EDIT: Seems that it really not possible to use SharePoint interface to set page layout for new sites: http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/9639/change-the-default-page-layout-used-for-new-sites .

OK, I suspect the issue is that you have custom content types. If you examine the page libraries in your new sites in settings, you'll see that your content type isn't added to the libraries by default, and therefore the page layout cant be chosen and it goes back to the original default.

Not possible to specify through the UI that new Page Libraries in new sites have your Content Type by default. It's a code solution to do this;

To set the default content type manually is detailed below, but I think you're beyond this point;
