log shipping and transaction log backups

I have inherited several SQL 2008 instances that have transaction log shipping set up.  On these instances there is also a separate maintenance job that runs a transaction log backup on the same databases where log shipping is set up.  To me this seems unnecessary.  Should I remove these databases out of the transaction log backup job or is there any reason to have both?

Yes, you should disable the log backup job.
and keep in mind that should log shipping be disabled, to reenable the transaction log backup or add this database to the job.
Your database is likely out of sync and needs to have replication setup anew.

Is db mirroring an option?
Commented:
You should validate that your database that is having the logs restored is up to date.

It would seem that you are not going to be in sync as every log backup needs to be applied to the secondary in order for things to be OK.
