Is there a way to encrypt the data that travels from the client end to the database.  How would I open the recordset or set it up?

Currently this is how I do it:

conn.Open "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=" & ConnectionIP & ",1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog= *****; User ID=sa;Password=********"
    rec.CursorLocation = adUseClient
    rec.Open (esql), conn, adOpenStatic, adLockOptimistic

If I just have the user access the vb6 program through a terminal server session, would that be as secure?

It depends on the terminal server.  Some offer encrypted transmission.

You need to ask some sys admins or network support folks.

If you look at the different products, you should see whether they offer encryption.

Example:
http://www.gotomypc.com/remote_access/remote_file_access
All data is protected with 128-bit AES encryption. Account access is protected by dual passwords and end-to-end user authentication. Enables HiTech and HIPAA compliance.
