DFSR between Server 2003 R2 32-bit and Server 2008 R2

adtapley used Ask the Experts™

Currently I am setting up DFS replication for one of our domains.  All servers are 2008 STD or 2008 R2 with the exception of one 2003 R2 32-bit server.  However, upon setting up the replication set through DFS from a 2008 server, it gives me this error for the 2003 box:

"The DFS Replication service is not installed."

I've gone through the steps found on Microsoft's site to install DFSR on the 2003 server, but keep getting the message that it can't find file "dfsrres.dll", which from what I've gathered is only available on a 2003 R2 x64 CD (we don't have any of these).

I have 2 questions actually related to this problem.  First is, is it at all possible to get DFSR installed on a 2003 R2 32-bit server?  Second is, if so, how can this be done and will we run in to any issues regarding replication or management of the DFSR connection between this server and the 2008 R2 server that will be the host?

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

I used to run DFSR between Windows 2003 R2 x86 and Windows 2008 x64 and Windows 2008 R2. It works just fine. You do need to make sure that the schema has been updated to Windows 2008 R2.

As for getting DFS-R installed on your Windows 2003 R2 Server, you should be able to do it once you install the R2 components from the second Windows 2003 R2 x86 CD.

Great!  Thank you for the information Kevin.  I'll check through the x86 CD again to see if I can install what I need and proceed as planned.
