sony vaio pcg-3f1m video problems

Hi,

sony vaio pcg-3f1m has got video issues. The screen flickers when you power it on. You can hardly see anything. When the laptop is connected to the external monitor the picture is fine.

I just would like to check with you exeprts what is your bet. Is it a video cable issue, screen or inverter?

many thanks for helping

the difficulty is that the picture is hadrly visible. The picture is a bit scrambled but does fill up the whole screen. Appears in little chanks in various places on the lcd screen...
That sounds like either a cable or lcd issue. Is it affected by moving/tilting the screen?

It does not seem to be affected. Client told me that she had the issue before and then all came back fine. This time it seems to be a permanent fault. When the laptop is switched on the screen is compeletely black. Then after a few seconds some chank of text comes up like in various places of the screen. It does not feel up the whole screen
So far I checked the end of the video cable that plug into a motherboard. Seems to be fine. The issue, however, persists...

The fact that the external monitor works means the video card is ok.  The problem is restricted to the display on the laptop - does the display change when you tilt the lid?  If it does, it's likely the cable.  If it randomly changes by itself, it could be the inverter or backlight.  The inverter is easier to replace, so I would start with that.  It looks like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-SONY-Vaio-PCG-3F1M-LCD-Screen-Inverter-1-443-887-51-/150594184504

I just had a word with the client. She said that she was able to fix the issue when it occured the first time a few weeks ago by tilting the screen... it was then fine for a couple of weeks...
From what you are saying above it means that it might be a video cable...
Sounds like jamietoner was on the right track.  However, with all the flexing, the signals may now be completely separated and will require a new cable.

Do you still advise on replacing the inverter first?
No, replace the cable, as that fits the information you have provided.
