I cant add a pst file to a profile in outlook 2010. The profile gets emails sitting on the sbs2003. I get an error when I try and add through the control panel "An unknown error occurred, error code: 0x8000700035. Cant add the pst file directly into outlook when its open either.

are you trying to import the email from a pst into exchange or open a pst file in Outlook?

Please clarify, "Cant add the pst file directly into outlook when its open either." do you mean import?

PST files are single use
So if its open, you not going to be able to do anything with it
(Open, IMport, Cut/Paste, Copy ect ect)

Before using it you need to make sure that no other user has it open in their outlook.

Assuming its closed

Have a look at the file size
Depending on the version or type of PST (Unicode/NonUnicode)

If its close to the maximum size (2GB for Non Unicode, 20GB for Unicode)
Its quite possible the file is corrupt.

Can open a pst file while outlook is running via: File/Open/Open Outlook Data File
And Cant add a PST file through the control panel via: Control panel/mail/data files/add

Hope this clears it up.

have you run scanpst on the pst you're trying to add?

IM assuming you have ensured no one else has this file open?

If you positive no one, or anything else has it open, nor is it in use by anyother applications

Its sounds as if it is corrupt

As Above, You can try scanpst

If you can open it up on another PC.....

Im wondering if the install of office was modified/admin to restrict access to PSTs

A uninstall/re-install of office should fix it

Id rather not reinstall if I can avoid it. The only other thing I can think of, was the pc had office 2003, we upgraded to 2010. Maybe its to do with the upgrade?

Can you try this on another PC that went through the same upgrade?

Could you also try closing and opening outlook using
Start>Run>Outlook.exe /safe

then try adding/opening pst
