sysback (IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for System Backup and Recovery) allows you to create a bootable backup tape with OS, as well as being able to be used for other data as well. Also can be used to restore OS in event of a hdisk0 (rootvg) failure.

This is a purchased product from IBM, with cost based upon the number of processors in the system.

Use "mksysb" (a tool included in AIX) to back up your rootvg, which contains the OS
(plus the user data you possibly put there).

The output can go to tape or DVD or a NIM server, which will create a bootable image suitable for bare metal recovery purposes, or to a disk file.

Use "savevg" (also included in AIX) to back up your non-rootvg user volume groups (to DVD or tape or NIM as above, but of course not bootable, or to a disk file).

See "man mksysb" and "man savevg" for more.
