I've got a bunch of .dat files located on computer #1 that I can open just fine with Word 2003 on computer #1.

I would like to open the .dat files with Word 2007 and Word 2010 from computer #2 via a mapped share to the computer #1.  Unfortunately, Word 2007/2010 will NOT open the files.

Right now, I have to open the .dat files on computer #1, save as .doc, then open on computer #2 with Word 2007.

Any suggestions?  I believe the .dat file may have been for Word Perfect but I can't be sure.

Thanks,
Darin

Try setting the option 'Confirm file conversion on open'. The 2003 system should show you what format that it thinks that it is dealing with.
