Microsoft Office Open File

I am having difficulty with Microsoft Office.  I can an application (excel, word) and then open a file no problem  If I try to open the file, thus loading application, I get an error every time for either application.

The message says "Windows cannot find {File Name}  Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again"

is {File Name} the name of the file your trying to open?
Or is it saying a different file.

My first guess would be that your file associations are wrong,
right click on the document you are trying to open and select open with, browse to your installation of office and select the right program

Yes that is correct on the {file name}  will try this now.

Or you could edit the file association directly...  if the %1 at the end of the command isn't surrounded by "double quotes" it's possibly being thrown off by a path with space in it, or long names.

Can't really give more specific directions without knowing the operating system.

Windows Vista  There was prior version of office upgraded to 2010.  I followed the advice in Microsoft article without success.  I tried the open as and even went to the exact Excel executable without success.  Sorry the message did not have quotes around it, I included to separate in my original post.

This machine did have OpenOffice installed on it at one point.
