experts,

I have a website hosted with godaddy. I want to be able to make changes to it on my own. I logon on to godaddy and under FTP File Manager I see my website contents for example [root]
images
and so on.

it said somewhere that if  I have frontpage i can download the files off my ftp to my desktop and make changes using frontpage and then upload them when done. i downloaded all the files and when I go to frontpage, click file and open site...I browse to the folder where I downloaded all the files and it says that the folders are empty but they are not because when I open them from the desktop there are the files. thanks for helping.

I hope you find something other than Frontpage to edit your files.  If they weren't created in Frontpage originally, you may find out that Frontpage will corrupt your files.  If you will post a link to your site, we can tell you what kind of programs you need.  None of us will recommend Frontpage.

That's a fairly simple web site.  What kind of changes do you want to make?  And what do you know about HTML?

Replace some pics, update the text and add new pics. I don't know HTML

You have to know or learn about HTML to edit websites.  Even programs like Frontpage won't save you from that.  In addition, pics will need to be resized to fit on your pages.

If you really want to do this, the first thing is to make a complete copy of your current site including the pictures and save it on a CD-ROM.  That way you can go get a fresh copy when things get messed up.

Then download a code editor (I use HTML-kit http://www.htmlkit.com/ ) and an image program (I recommend Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/ ).  This page http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp is a tutorial on HTML.  There are a lot of others sites with information also.

When you get stuck, come back and ask some more questions.
