I have client that had an excel file that they password protected.  Some how they made it "read only" Can not change.  Have gone into tools, removed from workbook, removed from file it self.  Changed password sharing in Network Sharing center.  Changed permissions as well.  Still "read only"

If it is not an overly huge spreadsheet, the client can open it, open a new blank workbook and then copy the information from old to new. That has corrected file errors for me.

Is this an offline file?
So you chose the unprotect workbook option?

Yes, I tried the workbook and the excel doc as well.  Still maintained "read only"

So you have a brand new (never before used) file, copied information into it, saved it under a new name and it is still read-only.

1. Are they using their spreadsheets on removable media?
2. Do an Office Repair. It depends on the version how to do the repair, so post back if you cannot find it.
3. Try this with a different Windows User Profile (windows userid) and see if this occurs in a different profile. It could be profile corruption.
4. Scan for viruses (always do this).
