Hi Guys,

could somebody confirm / shed some light on the following for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express edition.
Is it limited to 75 users on the BES, or does it depend on the environment it is installed in?

IT supports up to 2000 users on a dedicated server for IBM Lotus Domino
Or up to 75 users on your existing Exchange Server or Windows SBS server

In other words if you have more than 75 users on your exchange server this version is not for you.

Hi Yellowbusteam,

BES Express is not actually limited to the number of users. The only limitation is the hardware platform that it is installed on.

If you are installing BES Express on a Microsoft Small Business Server or onto an existing Exchange server, RIM recommend that you only have a maximum of 75 users on the BES.

If you are installing the BES on a dedicated server then the recommended maximum configuration is 2000 users.

As mentioned, though, these are RIM's recommendations based on performance and are not limited through licensing.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses that is exactly what we have been looking for.

Limitation of BES express over BES is maximum number of Policies. in express they already have around20 or 25 inbuilt policies. and in BES server you can specifiy the policies...
You would not Monitoring Feature and Failover option in Bes Express and certian limitation on the Policies.

Cheers Guys,

As we are only looking to cover around 35 user with the BES software then i would believe that BES Express would be sufficient.
But i just wanted to check that BES users were to go above 75 they would be ok to crack on. As from my understanding of the above if it is on its own server (i.e. not on the mail server) then that would be fine.

Cheers

main issue with Express for me is that there is no OTA support for activating and updating handsets.  There is an alleged work around involving an app from BB App World, but for my overseas users, losing the ability to do OTA activation is too heavy a price (plus we already paid a bit of cash for full BES and handset cals).

Hi IainNIX,

BES Express allows OTA activations and updates. It's the carrier's mobile tariffs that restrict it. Using BES Express with a full BES tariff will allow you to complete OTA activations.

thanks Mike, it seems to be widely posted that is was a BES Express issue, as our carrier/mobile support company told me about the BBW app.

I can give you a 100% guarantee that BES Express can perform OTA activations. All you need is the full BES tariff from the network rather than one of their cut-price, lower-service tariffs.

For example, on UK Vodafone there are three tariffs: BIS, BES Express and BES. These are bolt-ons to the standard sharer tariffs and cost £5, £7.50 and £10/month respectively. Only on the £10/month BES tariff does OTA activation work. BES Express is compatible with both of the other tariffs but you lose the OTA activation functionality.

Hope this is clear,

Mike
