Vista Update Issue

Hello all,
I have a bizarre issue that makes no sense to me.
I have a client's computer that was having a hard drive problem.  I was able to copy it's partition to another hard drive (old one was a Seagate 700 gig SATA drive and new one is a Seagate 1 tera SATA drive).  It has WIndows Vista Home 64 bit edition with SP1 on it.
Everything went across fine but I am having one problem.
Whenever I try to do a Windows update, I get a message that states Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running.
I tried to install SP2 for Vista on it, but it gets 60-70% of the way through and comes up with a critical error.
I have tried everything on the web that I could find about fixing doing Windows updates but nothing works.
I imagine this has something to do with the different hard drive but I have no idea what to do.
Thanks,
Kelly W.
