Netware 6.5 on VMWare with VMTools
Hi Guys,
Installing Netware 6.5 recently, we once again ran into problems with SATA storage-drivers, USB keyboard & mouse stalling during Netware installation, and a real waste of valuable time.
VMWare came to our rescue and the server was installed in no time.
We did some speed tests with Novell client for Windows 7, Windows XP with Novell running on VMWare and Novell running on a standard Novell Netware 6.5 installation.
These tests yield very interesting results, which we searched for initially, but was very hard to come by on the net.
CONCERN:
Initially copying files across to the standard Novell server installation from the Windows 7 client were almost 6 times faster than to the Novell installation on WMWare.
The Windows XP client were copying much faster, but still about 5 times faster compared to the VMWare setup.
Eventually we took a chance and installed the VMTools for Netware.
As Netware is pernickety about 3rd party drivers / software we were in doubt at first.
This proofed to be a very successful move. Copying 450MB of data, initially took over 6 minutes from the Windows 7 client to the WMWare Netware setup.
With the VMTools, the same copy took 45 seconds.
The Windows XP client was even faster with 18 seconds, but execution speeds was almost instant.
As I am fairly new to the VMWare and Netware combination, I still have the following concerns;
- How does power failures or sudden shut-down effect the VMWare volumes or Netware volumes inside? Could these easily become corrupt?
- Are there any specific maintenance / concerns that comes to mind when running WMWare over a long period of time?

Thus, single complete backup?
Should I look for a specific UPS / software, as I am not sure whether any UPS will be able to shut-down the VMWare O/S?
