Cant get SNMP response from HP Proliant servers?

Hi,

Recently had an aircon failure in our server room which caused my DCs to shutdown.  While I am working on my boss to allow me to buy a ServersCheck Temp Monitor I thought I would try and find a way for my Nagios box to alert me to the temps instead.

I have HP Proliant Servers (Dl160 G6, DL180G6 and DL360G6) but only the DL360G6 has an ILO.  I have found the check_hp plugin for Nagios but when I try this I can only query the ilo card on my DL360, but dont get any SNMP response from the other servers.

I cant seem to find out how to enable SNMP responses from the other servers?  All servers are running Windows 2003 R2.  Any ideas?

Failing that, does anyone have an idea how I can create a custom temp alert from the servers?  At the minute the HP Management Agents dont alert until they hit a critical temp and you cant change this (42c) but I would like to receive an email alert say when the ambient temp sensor hits 30c so I know the AC has failed.

Any ideas for that too or should I just wait until/if my boss will approve the ServersCheck device?

Thanks,

Andy

there is a way to check your problem. If you have access to a linux box or to snmpwalksoftware on windows. Make first a snmpwalk globaly. The syntax for depends what are you using and its good documentet on many websites. If you still not getting any respons then maybe the security tab on the snmp service properties is the problem. Here you can define on which snmp query the server is allowed to answer. Check if it right setup. There is also the possibility of a firewall issue. SNMP has to be enabled in any firewall.

If you get the snmpwalk to work then you will need the mibs for your hardware. SNMP is a kind of coded database (only to explain) in mibs you have a tree with informations that you can read out. By the way if you search for a servercheck invest more time to find one. You should also think not only to check the health of a server also the bandwidth should be checked. And if you have cisco inhouse look more deeply which tool can comunicate also with.

Thanks!  I had SNMP configured and started, but only had localhost under snmp security.  Once I added in my Nagios host IP address it was able to query OK.

Thanks for the pointers.
