asked on

"bad IP" result from iptools.com

Hello Folks,

I was asked to check a client's domain name for spam blacklisting on RBLs.

I normally use mxtoolbox.com which I've always found to be reliable, as it first finds the MX record then checks the IP against RBLs

The IP passed the 35 searches, then passed the 106 searches when "check against all blacklists" option was selected.

However, I used another service which I must admit is unfamiliar to me, but seems popular, it's called iptools.com
The results from iptools.com was perplexing, running it multiple times, it either returned "no results" , or more worrying, ALL of the 100+ results came back as "bad ip" ?

I have tried this again and again at different times, and same thing happens.

Considering it's more or less the same RBLs it gets its results from, points more to iptools.com issue, than the actual IP, but obviously it is something I would like to resolve.

Does anyone have any ideas, or have any experience of using iptools.com

many thanks for any suggestion.

I didn't receive a bad ip error however about half their lists are old, non-existant, and some I have never heard of. I couldn't find one that was also on mxtoolbox.com or http://www.blacklistalert.org/

You said some were listed on mxtoolbox. Can you send a link where your checking the ip or a screenshot of it. All I saw were red and green boxes. The green ones were working and I checked a few.

Hi pclinuxguru

Thanks for the feedback.

If I ask iptools to check some other domain that actually brings results, it will return a list of RBLs, which Im assumming "Green" background is good and "Red" means bad.

The very 1st RBL checked by iptools is AHBL, which is also on the list for mxtoolbox

Another couple at random are SORBS-BLOCK and OSPAM which are on both lists, but there are many more.

I checked the domain name from the home page of iptools at http://www.iptools.com/
using the "Spam DB lookup" box.
Update:

sorry pclinuxguru, just to be clear, when the clients domain name is checked, instead of all the results you would notmally see, with green background, what is actually returned instead is "bad IP" in every single box. (doesn't say which RBL returned the error)

Or,

a page simply says.......  "No Results"
User generated imagehere is a screenshot of the results when domain is searched (remember, mxtoolbox returns ALL 106 entries as clean)

Hi pclinuxguru

You seem to be confirming what I'm already thinking - just ignore results from iptools.com as they don't seem to be accurate.

Does anyone else have experience of iptools.com and could it's results be highlighting an issue I have't spotted yet ?

Thanks for any input.
