550 5.7.1 unable to realy - can't send a test email with telnet
Hello Experts,
I just went through this config: http://www.itsolutionskb.com/2008/11/installing-and-configuring-windows-server-2008-smtp-server/Â so that my client can send out smtp emails from their Microsoft Dynamics SQL Server
When I get to the end to test out to see if the email works I get unable to relay 550 5.7.1
I think port 25 is not open?, we have a Sonicwall firewall.
How can I get the smtp email flowing?, what do I need to do?
Thanks,
Lasareath

It is not about port 25 since Unable To relay error is returned by your email server. There is no permission for the sender to send emails using your server. Check google, there plenty of advices on how to configure proper relay

What sender address are they using to send the email. By default it would not allow to send from the foreign domain and hence not allowing the relay.

I tried sending from one of my personal gmail email accounts to another gmail account.
Is that the problem?

So that would mean that you are setting it up as open relay.
Beware that would mean that this server could be use for spamming.

I don't care if it can be used for spammers. It's intended use is to email reports from Microsoft Dynamics without using our internal exchange server.
Being the IT consultant I need to make sure that the Microsoft Dynamics consultant can do that.
So back to the question, what do I need to do to be able to send a successful test email with telnet on this new 2008 server?

Could you post the telnet session? Remove the original sender and recipient email addresses and any public IP address if listed in the telnet session.
I would like to know exactly where the error is generated

SSharma,
Well I just tried it right now and it's completely different. as soon as I try telnet localhost 25
I get an error that "could not open connection to the host on port 25" connect failed.
2 nights ago it connected and I was able to enter HELO then mail from:, then rcpt to:
not sure what's going on now.

Make sure SMTP service is running on the server

SMTP was running. I spelled localhost wrong :(
Attached is a screenshot of what I just tried.

Are you suing IIS SMTP service?
ASKER
Not sure, I'll check
@Lasareath,
As per the article from where you have configured the SMTP, on Step 9, what's the IP address which you have configured to send the emails?
Is that only 127.0.0.1?
You might need to add the IP address of the system from where the connection has been made to send the email.

Yes, it's currently set to 127.0.0.1
So should it be set to the IP of my SonicWall?
