ESRI is definitely one of the big players in the GIS field...if not the biggest commercial vendor.  They've got tons of great information on their website.  Here's a link to their info on geodatabases:

Another term to look for is a spatial database.  Penn State has a reputable GIS program, and here is a link to an intro to spatial databases they put together:

Other big names to look for are Oracle Spatial, ArcSDE, and Postgre.
