How do i seize FSMO roles from a DC that is crashed
I have a 2008 server that is a GC server and a working DC. My 2000 machine that had the FSMO roles crashed and is gone. I will not reintroduce it to the network. How to I seize the roles for my 2008 machine to take over?
I use the ntutil command?
Thanks.

Yes, you will be performing this on the DC seizing the roles
Example:
Currently logged onto DC3
connect to server DC3
Example:
Currently logged onto DC3
connect to server DC3
ASKER
i got an error, the current FSMO holder could not be contacted.
now what?
now what?
You are typing this from a working DC, right?
ntdsutil
roles
connection
connect to server your_server_name
ntdsutil
roles
connection
connect to server your_server_name
ASKER
yes, but if it is trying to connect to the server that HAD the FSMO roles, it will not be able to since that one is no longer on the network. Should it still work?
ASKER
ok, redid it and it worked this time.
thanks

how do I remove replication for the DC that crashed so I don't get errors in the event log of fail replication to it?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Remove the server from Active Directory Sites and Services. Right click and delete your nonexistent server. AD does an automatic cleanup after you do this.
You can force replication through Sites and Services or through the command line:
repadmin /syncall
repadmin /syncall
ASKER
it gave me an error when I tried to delete the server from sites. It says I have to use the dcpromo on that server to remove it. Any way around this?
Thanks.
Thanks.
When you are in Sites and Services expand the site (blue icon) and then servers and then the server name. There is another blue icon called NTDS settings. You will need to delete this one first.
ASKER
the DC that has the roles, is gone.
curious about the line "connect to server"? So I am connecting to itself?
