Converting video file without losing quality

I have a .mov video file that needs to be play using Windows Media Player. On this PC, I am able to play other .mov file using WMP, however, I am not able to play this .mov video file. I think the codec is not right or something.

Can anyone guide me to the correct codec or a video converter that is able to convert the video without losing the quality?

I am not sure what codec it is encoded in, any program to check? I have AnyVideoConverter, when I put the file in, it shows the format of video as H264.

Take a look at Freecorder. Great software!

i downloaded it. How do I make my file appear in the list for selection? Which folder does it scans?

From wikipedia - H.264 is perhaps best known as being one of the codec standards for Blu-ray Discs; all Blu-ray Disc players must be able to decode H.264. It is also widely used by streaming internet sources, such as videos from Vimeo, YouTube, and the iTunes Store, web software such as the Adobe Flash Player and Microsoft Silverlight.

As for a player- try this http://www.videolan.org/

I am restricted to using WMP. It is the built-in control that I have used in my C# windows form programming. So I need a way to make it play using WMP and not other players.

Let's start with this - you can watch your other MOV videos with WMP. The problem is only one MOV video.

First, you need a software for analyzing that MOV file and compare with other MOV files.

Please, download one simple program that will enable analyze these files with just one click on the right mouse button.

It is MediaInfo Lite program that is FREEWARE. The new version from 19th May 2012 you can download from Softpedia.com:

Then install this program. Now you are ready to select any MOV, AVI, FLV, MP4, MKV video or any audio file and even image and then click the right mouse button.

In your case, select MOV file then press right mouse button and choose Media Info option:

Right mouse button click
You will get a new window with complete information about your video file.
Here are many details, but you will need only information for video and audio codec:

You can see that my MOV file has video that is encoded with H.264 video codec. And audio is encoded with AAC audio codec. And that is OK.

Now, analyze your MOV video file, you can't watch with WMP, with MediaInfo and post types of video and audio codecs here.
Also, use MediaInfo to see what type of codecs is used in those MOV videos that you can play with WMP.
So, try to compare these codecs. Simply, you only need to see are the codecs in that problematic MOV file ( especially audio codec ) different from video and audio codecs in other MOV videos you can watch with WMP without a problems.

Thanks for your detailed explanation.

The 2 .mov files differ in its audio codec. The one that I am not able to play is in PCM format.

I will try to see if I can get this PCM codec.

Well, I have to say that PCM decoder and encoder are the part of Windows operating system and that PCM codec is usually used to make .WAV files and that is OK.

I will try to see if I can get this PCM codec.

Don't do that. It will be good that you write in your post which audio codec is in your other MOV files that you can watch with WMP.

There are 2 reasons.

First, PCM decoder and encoder are the part of Windows operating system and PCM codec is usually used to make .WAV files and that is alreaddy in your Windows.

But, second reason is more important - I suppose that in MOV files you can watch is audio that is encoded with AAC codec.

But, Media players will not play MOV or MP4 files in most cases if these files haven't AAC audio with a H.264 video encoded.
Yes, it is a truth. Because this is a standard for such file that is not strictly applied in all media players.

So, if the other MOV files have a video encoded with H.264 and audio encoded with AAC codec then you can very, very easy convert ONLY audio stream in your MOV file that is encoded with PCM codec into audio that will be encoded with AAC codec.

One note - your video part of this MOV video file will stay UNTOUCHED and that means your video part will not be converted. So, you will have the SAME video with SAME quality.

OK ? And only audio part will be converted from PCM audio into AAC audio and that audio will have very, very good quality.

In such way you will have new file with untouched video and converted audio stream and you will be able to play that file in WMP.

But first, I have to know which audio codec is used in your other MOV files you can watch with WMP !!!

And then I will send you only 2 files that will convert your audio, without your any previous knowledge how to do it, because, in fact, there is no need to learn anything about these files, because converting is automatic and all that you need is to know the name of original MOV video and output MOV video.

Of course, I will send you one short and brief video tutorial ( about 1 minute long ) that will show you these 2 short simple steps when you enter the name of the input and output files.

You are right, AAC is the audio format that is able to play with WMP. So what program to use to convert only the audio?
