All the references I've found for this issue do not help. I am ready to dump ubuntu!

Have you found a solution that works?

I am trying to access a web page with java applet.

go to www.java.com, click on free java download and select linux (if you are running x64 then select linux x64).

It will prompt to open or save the file.  Select save.   Open a terminal window and type...

cd /opt
sudo tar zxf ~/Downloads/jre-7u4-linux-i586.tar.gz

If you downloaded the x64 version, the file name will be jre-7u4-linux-x64.tar.gz

then type...

mkdir ~/.mozilla/plugins
cd ~/.mozilla/plugins
ln -s /opt/jre1.7.0_04/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so libnpjp2.so

then open firefox and go to about:plugins
I just tried on my system and the site works (will be prompted to run the applet)

I had to change ln -s /opt/jre1.7.0_04/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so libnpjp2.so
to ln -s /opt/jre1.7.0_04/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so libnpjp2.so
That worked. Thanks.
