Hi all,

I have one IBM DS5020 storage, all the slots are full, and we have big array configured with raid10
we wanted to add some more disk space into the existing RAID10
i have some questions :

1) i need to buy an EXP520 expansion unit to connect to the DS5020, do i have to rebuild the existing RAID10 or not ? i dont want to, because it is in use with all the data on it.
2) if the answer to the above question is NO, how do i do it without reformating the data ?

thanks!

depends if you just want to create a new array or expend the old array if you expanding the old array you need to use the correct ammount of disks

It's certainly possible to expand the current aray, DS5000 is LSI Engenio based (now owned by Netapp). Some rules about about adding enclosures live and other rules about adding disks and waiting several minutes in between each addition though, will try to find the manual.

Are you prepared to power down to add the enclosure? That's certainly easier then adding one live.

Cold add of enclosure is described on page 54 and subsequent of ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/system_x_pdf/44r5318.pdf, hot add is in http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/systems/support/system_x_pdf/81y2470.pdf, but you'll need both docs, on for the backend loop topology and the other for adding the disks, rule is two at a time and wait 5 minutes for them to appear.

ow many EXP520 / EXP800 have you got at present? If less than two then should be easy to add an enclosure hot since you don't have to break and reconnect any backend loops.
