Want to upgrade an SFF desktop

I made a mistake by buying a friend an SFF computer (Acer Veriton X series) and now he wants to upgrade it with a new video card.  Which means he also needs to upgrade the power supply.  What should we do?  Can we buy a regular power supply and hook it up leaving it outside the tower?  or do we have to buy a TXF power supply because anything else won't be compatible?

Thank for the help.  Please let me know if you need any other questions answered.

Leaving a regular power supply is keeping it hooked up outside the box is extremely dangerous. I think you already know the route to take.

The existing PSU should have enough power for a low end video card. What is wattage on 12 volt rail and what video card are you considering?

Currently does 250W but wouldn't mind getting a card that requires a 400W and above.  As for video card selection, one of the low profile one's.  But would all depend on what kind of wattage we can get in a power supply.

personally, i would not upgrade it with a video card needign a more powerful PS
it will bring more heat in the SFF, and can cause early failure
The SFF's were not intended for this sort of video cards

Better not to throw good money after bad.  If your friend wants a better video card, he intends to do things with it that require more powerful components overall (like gaming).  He's going to want better parts over time, so why not do it the right way now?  Just go for PC components that give you the most bang for the buck, and the ability to upgrade in the future.

I agree with nobus and Callandor. SFF PCs are not made to handle the heat generated by more powerful video cards and PSUs. Although you are limited to cards which are low profile and therefore less powerful, there is still an additional heat load.

Thanks for the advice.  Just was hoping for an easy way out for a bad choice on my part.  We've found someone to buy the computer and we are going to start from scratch with a barebones kit.
