Replacing Windows 2000 server with a Win 7 Pro Workstation & copying user profiles

I have a mixture of Windows XP & Windows 7 Professional
pc's that are currently joined to a Windows 2000 domain.
Approx 9 pc's. I want to get rid of the server & replace it with a
Windows 7 Professional pc which will be the new server.

i want to copy the user profiles over with as little hassle as possible. Any advise?

If you have previously logged in windows 7 professional with the domain accounts the user account is created in windows 7 and the next step is use the Windows Easy Transfer and switching the user account from domain to the  Standalone Windows 7 Professional.



will this work within a pc if u know what i mean? ie to the same pc (not another pc)
will it work from a domain scenario to a workgroup scenario for xp & win 7.

will you still have a domain server for AD/DHCP/DNS etc??  or are you removing the last server and looking at setting up a workgroup?

Using Win 7 Pro as a server might cause you some issues with other systems accessing/sharing (esp XP and 2000/2003 systems) as some services will not work like they do on a server platform (multiple connections).  if you are dissolving your domain server, you might have to ensure you clear any group policy settings and change your network configs if you use DHCP from the server just now.  more info you give, the better we can help.

i'm looking at just setting up a workgroup.
the WIn 7 Pro workgroup server will simply share files & printers.
Most of their data is cloud based now so there is no need for an expensive server anymore.
The router will allocate ip addresses.
There is not much security currently - no  real policies setup.

ok so you have the advantage of having a basic setup, but all your systems and users accounts if they are setup as domain systems, will give you a bit of work to do, as they would need to all be removed from the domain, back to their orig machine names and then setup in the same workgroup, you will then need to visit each system to point them @ the router for DHCP/DNS in the network properties.  For completeness, users will need new profiles on their local systems, as the current ones will be tied to their AD login via the server and those will be lost with the server being shut-down.  They could still use the domain profiles, but if anyone forgets a password or certain apps like Outlook try to connect using the inherited creds, you might have issues/lockouts.

the Win 7 system you use as the sharing server, will need to make sure the File & Print Sharing service is on as well as Network Discovery (Adv Sharing Settings).  Nobody should need to log into it directly, as it will be performing all your server duties.  if you have any non 7/2008 systems, you might want to enable 40/56bit file sharing rather than 128bit default.  Also under Progs & Features>Turn Win Features On/Off, untick Remote Compression Diff.  DNS must work well for Win 7 use, more so if you are accessing data in the cloud.  You should also consider using 64bit Win 7 if possible, to use extra RAM/resources, but ensure that you have 64bit drivers for all your kit such as Printers.  You will need to add Printers onto the system and share them with 32/64bit drivers depending on your user systems OS.

for what it's worth, if the older server is all bought/paid for and has a fixed OS license, there should be minimal costs involved in upkeep, doing the task you wish to do is going to give you a lot of work and not as much centralised control or the ability to use services such as WSUS for patch management or push out settings to all systems (GPO) to keep everything equal and configured the same.
About the Windows Easy Transfer  ...

When you start up the easy Transfer it will normally ask you where to save the data.  Run the Wizard as normal and backup the data.

Once the process is complete reboot the system and login as a Domain User.  Start typing Easy Transfer in your Search bar, right click and “Run as Administrator”.  Re run the Wizard again, specifying this is the New PC and browse to the location where your stored the Migration Data file.   Before completing the Wizard and allowing the data migrate back you’ll see an easily missed option on the lower right side that says “Advanced”.

When you select advanced you’ll see it prompting for the old and new profile.  By default it will recreate the account on the new system.   You can choose ANY profile already setup on that computer (Domain user ID or in this case a local User) as the destination.

Allow the process to finish the Migration and you’re done.  You may have to log off and then log on to take on the new settings.

But in the field I didn’t always have the luxury of having an extra hard drive to play with.  Sometimes space was scarce.   So in this scenario we can cheat a little and just get the Configuration and use a cut and paste for the data (since it’s on the same hard drive)

So what you’re going to do in Easy Transfer, after it runs it’s initial scan, is to DESELECT whatever you’re not moving.  Typically Music, Documents, Etc (since this transfer will occur on the same hard drive we don’t NEED to replicate data; just move it.

I remember that in windows xp have a possibilty to copy profiles and windows 7 is the same.

You probably are going to some issues that you turn around with the solution below:

1. Download a little freeware program called “Windows Enabler 1.1”
(It’s a handy little portable utility I keep on my thumb drive and network utilities folder. All you need is the “Windows Enabler.exe” and “EnablerDLL.dll” together in a folder.)

2. Run Windows Enabler *as Administrator* on the Windows 7 machine, and a little blue & white icon will show up in your system tray.
3. Bring up the “Users Profile” window, and select the profile you wish to copy where the button is grayed out.
4. Click on the Windows Enabler icon in your system tray, and it should say “On”
5. Click once on the “Copy To” button, and it should un-gray the button. Click the Windows Enabler icon again to turn it off.
6. Now, you have your Copy To button working! Copy the user profiles as you normally would, and try logging in as a new user on the machine.

The reverse and "fun" way ...

If you have a machine with windows vista you can transfer the files using the DVD in the machine with  windows 2000 sp2 and in the machine with windows vista copy them to windows 7.

I have done some basic experience (i've backup only my favourites folder) with a DVD of windows Vista in XP see the result attached .

For the records:
Windows Easy Transfer in Windows Vista supports the following operating systems:
Windows 2000 SP 4
Windows XP SP 2
Windows Vista

With Windows 7 the source computer can be running any of the following operating systems:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Is not possible use windows 2000 -> windows 7.
