Refomat a USB drive

I successfully formatted a USB flash as a boot disk for my PC desktop that was downed by a virus.  The virus is removed from the hard drive.  Windows 98 reformated the disk, but I need to run a program through the USB drive in order to fix the E drive operation.  I get an error that the E drive partition is incorrectly labeled (or may be) as non-LBA.

I want to use the same USB SanDisk Cruizer to try to fix the problem, probably with Parted Magic or Knoppix.  The programs were recommended here and were useful in repairing a partition of a hard drive.

The problem is that the USB stick will not boot the PC now.  I need to reformat the USB to use as it was before I put a special boot disk on it.  I've erased the drive and also reformatted and tried to boot with Unbootin but this was not successful. How can I return the USB SanDisk to install these utilities?

Try using DISKPART tool. In your Windows XP type in command-line

diskpart
list disk

review which number is your pendrive and then type

select disk <number>
clean
create partition primary
exit

and format it under Windows

Regards,
Krzysztof
Try this using Windows 7:

diskpart
list disk
select disk #
clean
create partition primary
format fs=ntfs quick
assign letter=Z

Hello Shoshana23,

For clarity so that I fully understand what you are attempting to do...
The OS that you are doing this all on is Windows 98 - Correct?
If so, is there an newer OS that you can use, say Windows XP or 7?

I hope I understood your question.

Since this appears to be a 'clean' situation, meaning that the USB Flash Drive does not have any critical data, HP has a very nice tool that will format your flash drive:

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

It is even located on CNET, which is a very safe website to download software.

As a start, may I suggest that try the HP tool and see if the device is functional; then we can move towards the

The download for USB storage format worked great.  I have Parted Magic running, but not sure if this will fix the error reported on the E drive.

I was trying to install Windows 98 as the initial OS, however, I use an XP installation over that.  I want to get them both running again.  The hardware is not that old.  Im not sure if the error refers to the drive issue of the CD ROMdrive or the CD.  Sometimes the Drive letters are progressed one, so could that be the case here?

I will try Knoppix.  would Clonzilla be helpful here?
