I thought it was Iolo System Mechanic. So I fired them and installed Webroot.

Same problem.

Windows Explorer is a critical underlying component of Windows (always has been).

1. Scan for malware. The most obvious cause of this issue is a virus or other malware.
2. Try running System File Checker. From an admin command prompt, run SFC /SCANNOW and allow to complete. Run again if errors remained. Restart the computer.
3. If the first two do not work and if you have the Windows 7 DVD, back up and try a Repair Install.

Please let us know. .... Thinkpads_User
You can also try avg, malwarebytes, and clamwin to attack this problem.

I'd personally start with the clamwin portable, and scan from a thumb drive. Once you clean everything off that it detects then try the other two. These tools are free or have free versions. Let me know if you have any questions.

Clamwin found stuff that Webroot did not nor Iolo. Surprising. However - getting the stuff off is a bit more complicated than it first appears.
