music editing software

I know nothing about this but I was wondering, is there music editing software that would allow you to remove the singer from a song so that you could just have the supporting music?

There are some techniques you can use to cancel part of the voice (along with any other center channel signals).  You can't simply 'remove' them though, you will still have some, sometimes a lot, of the singer's voice left.  In Karaoke CD's, they don't put the voice tracks on there to begin with.

What we used to do is make a third track that is a 1-to-1 mix of the stereo tracks.  Then you filter it to limit it as much as you can to just the voice.  Then you invert it to make it out of phase with the original and add some of it back to the original two tracks.  The in phase and out of phase signals will cancel though imperfectly and you will lower the level of the voice.  If you have a solo voice, it might work Ok, depends on the music.  If you have a lot of voices with a lot of range like a choir it gets pretty difficult.

MultiMedia Applications

Multimedia applications are those programs that integrate more than one media at a time; browsers are the most obvious. However, the term has come to include the use of programs that enable the use of any component that isn’t simple text and static graphics, such as audio, video, animation, virtual reality, conferencing and monitoring.
