I need a .PDF document viewer that will allow me to copy text out of .PDF documents.

I am in the process of completing lab exercises out of books and have several rather long command line or power shell commands that I need to type in.

So I need to be able to copy these rather long command line or power shell commands directly out of the electronic version of the book which is stored on a  .PDF file.

I have been unable to do this with the full version of Adobe Acrobat 9 or with Adobe Reader 10.

I know that there are a lot of other third party .PDF document viewing programs available.

Do any of these programs allow for the copying of text out of .PDF documents?

If you want only copy text, i suggest Foxit Reader.
I just tested copying text from pdf to for example notepad and it works
If you are unable to copy text, the PDF itself may have some level of protection/security applied.

Check the Document Properties (ctrl D) to what is allowed.

If you can't copy with Adobe (Acrobat and Reader certainly can do this), then as jmpg_70 said, the document may be protected.  The other thing that occurs to me is whether the .PDF is indexable (i.e. actually has text) or is just made up of images of text.  If it's images then there's no way (unless you were able to copy the image and then run an OCR program on it).
Acrobat Pro 9 and X both have awesome in built OCR which maintains the OCR components within the PDF, pretty slick, but at a financial outlay.
It is kind of obvious that the document is secured and does not seem to want to let you do this. So i guess one option could be to try and remove these restrictions.

If that does not work for you than try one of the free tools from this article.

Hopefully one of these methods will work for you.

Good Luck!
