By default are there any activity logs on a xenapp server that would show for a specific day what applications a user accessed on that session? i.e. user Y logged in to xenapp server X, a daily report showing what they did, in terms of which apps they used? Can this be configured, is it configured by default?

Yes, you can get all the details using Edgesight tool. If you are in platinum edition license then you can install this tool and configure it.

Are these audit events turned on by default though, i.e. where do you configure what to audit and what not to audit. I guess edgesite only reports on what audit logs are available?
To configure edgesight, goto citrix site http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX111313 and download the document.

If you have access to edgesite can you show a sample user activity report for a specific day so I can visualise what it can produce?
yes once you configure edge sight will pull the session details automatically from xenapp servers. Only thing you need to install the agent in citrix servers.

So just to sweep up -

1) You have to configure what to record in terms of session info? I.e. the admin can audit as much or as little info as they like

2) Is edgesite a tool just for newer versions of citrix, or has it been around a long time, going back to older versions too?

3) Are there any performance issues in auditing all these events, i.e. if you have 400 users accessing 20 different xenapp servers, is the auditing of all their session acitivity going to cause any specific issues/performance issues?

4) Does it go as far as "files accessed" during a session, i.e. user X logged into citrix, then pursued to open my computer, access this share, then access these .docx files on that share?

No performance issue in auditing the event as we have same type of environment.

I don't think so you can get session details without using edgesight.
